Most people are. It feels like something is going wrong. But the numbers often tell the opposite story.

In June 2026, Australian centres using 1Place scheduled and completed 424,008 compliance and safety checklists. They logged 44,682 incidents and raised 6,694 maintenance and operational tickets. At first glance, tens of thousands of incidents can look alarming. Look closer, and it is one of the healthiest things a centre can show.

Higher numbers usually mean better visibility, not less safety

“When the numbers go up, people panic. But usually it is the best thing that could happen.”

When a centre moves from paper to 1Place, reported numbers tend to rise. That is not because more is going wrong. It is because more is being seen, recorded, and acted on.

“When the numbers go up, people panic. But usually it is the best thing that could happen,” says Alanah Alexander, Customer Solutions Representative at 1Place. “It means people are finally reporting. You cannot fix what you never see.”

Paper forms get lost. They sit in a bag, never make it to the office, or never get filled in at all. A minor harm, a near miss, a scratch on the knee: on paper, these often go unrecorded. Once reporting is fast and simple, they surface. What looks like an increase is really the gap closing between what happens and what gets captured.

Rising incident numbers often signal a reporting culture that is working. Staff feel comfortable reporting. Nothing is too small to log. That is exactly what you want, because you cannot act on what you cannot see.

The number that matters is severity, not volume

“Reports going up while severity comes down. That tells me the environment is genuinely getting safer, not just better documented.”

Volume tells you people are reporting. Severity tells you whether your environment is actually getting safer.

This is where the data earns its keep. A centre can see incidents rise while the seriousness of those incidents falls: fewer first aid cases, fewer doctor and emergency department visits, more reports logged with no injury at all. That combination is the goal. More reporting, less harm.

“That is the number I look at,” says Alexander. “Reports going up while severity comes down. That tells me the environment is genuinely getting safer, not just better documented.”

Real Impact: Catholic Education NT on Scaling Safety with 1Place

Catholic Education Northern Territory has lived this. After scaling 1Place across their system, reported incidents went up, but severity came down.

You can read their full story here.

From a number to a decision

“The moment it is in front of you, you can act. That is the whole point.”

Data only matters if you can act on it. The real power is in breaking it down.

With real-time visibility across every centre, room, and checklist, patterns emerge before they become problems. One room reporting far more than another. A recurring type of incident. A time of day when things go wrong. A checklist marked complete just before an incident that checklist was designed to prevent. These are the threads that let a director ask the right question of the right person, and change a process before harm repeats.

“When it is on paper and you cannot see it, those patterns are almost impossible to spot,” says Alexander. “The moment it is in front of you, you can act. That is the whole point.”

Every checklist and audit in 1Place exists for a reason: to keep the environment safe. When incidents are captured against that flow, you can trace back, spot the gap, and close it.

Safer, and ready when it counts

This is the shift from “I think we are safe” to “I know we are safe.” It protects everyone from classroom to boardroom: children through consistent safeguarding, educators through documented compliance, directors and boards through assurance they can stand behind.

It also means you are never scrambling before an assessment. When every check and incident is documented as it happens, assessment and ratings readiness is simply the byproduct of how you work every day. That is real peace of mind. Audit-ready, at every level, all the time.

So next time your reported numbers climb, resist the urge to see a problem. It may be the clearest sign yet that your team is doing its job: watching closely, reporting openly, and acting early.

Worried when your incident reports start climbing?
